4-H/Virginia Cooperative Extension/LRN partnership:

    • Junior Master Gardener Summer Day Camp – June 23 – June 27, 9:00 am – 3:00 pm (LRN portion 12:00 pm – 3:00 pm and entire day Thursday for Field trip) – This camp will focus its mornings on plants and wildlife in Colonial and modern times through crafts, games and outdoor activities. The afternoons will be spent focusing on the adjacent waterways of the Lynnhaven River, exploring historical and ecological importance through hands on activities with maps, water sampling and wetland exploration. On Thursday, campers will take a trip on the CBF Baywatcher to explore the Lynnhaven first hand.

Summer 2008 Teacher Development Opportunities

Virginia Beach Public Schools/LRN partnership:

    • Reducing Runoff in the Watershed  - June 17, 8:30 am – 12:30 pm – A half day workshop focusing on runoff in our local watersheds and how it can be reduced, including information on the Chesapeake Bay and how to set up a rain barrel to reduce runoff at your school.
    • Going Green: An Introduction Model to Involve Students in Community and Educational Projects – June 19, 8:30 am – 12:30 pm – In this half day program, follow the successes of two local schools and explore “Going Green” with your students through resources available on starting a River Keepers program.
    • Building a Rain Garden: A Lynnhaven River Project – July 17, 8:00 am – 3:00 pm – In the morning, learn about basic watershed concepts and Lynnhaven River issues with a focus on surface water runoff problems. Then help construct a rain garden in the afternoon to address the runoff problems. This full day program provides the know-how for any teacher to model environmental stewardship on his or her school grounds.
    • Introduction to Oyster Reef Restoration in the Lynnhaven River – August 7, 8:00 am – 3:00 pm – This full day workshop provides teachers with information on oysters including hands-on activities that will highlight the oyster’s important role in improving water quality.
    • Joining the Effort: A Lynnhaven River Project – Aug 8, 8:00 am – 4:30 pm – This full day continuation of the Introduction to Oyster Reef Restoration will take place aboard a Chesapeake Bay Foundation vessel. It will include a more in-depth look at reef restoration, oyster biology, history and the ecological role that oysters continue to play in our local waters. Prerequisite: Completion of 2008 Introduction to Oyster Reef Restoration in the Lynnhaven River. Limited to 15 people.
    • Understanding Watersheds – July 14 – July 15, 8:00 am – 4:30 pm – This two day course will begin with a classroom component which covers watershed basics, links between land use, runoff and water quality, and related environmental issues. The second day of this course will be spent aboard a Chesapeake Bay Foundation boat investigating water chemistry and its link to water quality.
    • Advanced Oyster Gardeners’ Field Skills and Classroom Curriculum – July 9, 9:00 am – 12:00 pm - This advanced course is for teachers currently involved in Oyster Gardening and/or Oyster Reef Restoration Projects. These curriculum activities are designed to help teachers bring the field component of oyster gardening into their classroom. The focus of this course will be on developing field skill and will include a species identification dichotomous key and field sampling activity designed to teach students about accurate oyster sampling. Teachers will leave with all of the activities materials needed to do these projects with students.

Chesapeake Wine Classic Grant:

Understanding Watershed Chemistry through Earth ScienceAugust 6 & 7, 8:00 am – 4:30 pm - Lynnhaven River NOW is excited to launch a pilot program, Restoring the Lynnhaven: Water Quality Education for the River’s Future, and needs to recruit 15 Earth Science teachers to participate in the upcoming 2008-09 school year. This exciting new program will offer students the opportunity to relate water chemistry to water quality in a framework of overall Earth function and health. Understanding Watershed Chemistry through Earth Science will provide recruits with the knowledge and equipment necessary to participate in this pilot program. Workshop participants must be willing to commit to the Restoring the Lynnhaven: Water Quality Education for the River’s Future for the 2008-09 school year. If you need more information about this program, contact Helen Kuhns, hkuhns@lynnhaven2007.com.

NOAA/LRN Partnership:

Phytoplankton Monitoring Network Workshop – Aug 14, 9:00 am – 4:00 pm – This workshop works with educators to provide the knowledge and training to monitor phytoplankton in local waterways. These are organisms are the base of the marine food chain and they provide over 80% of the oxygen for the planet. Educators can volunteer to regularly monitor local waterways with their students. NOAA will provide the equipment necessary for the monitoring. This network works to “educate the public of harmful algae blooms while expanding the knowledge of phytoplankton that exist in coastal waterways.”
