Buffer Restoration Guide

Committee Description:

The Buffer Restoration Committee exists to help homeowners reduce nutrients, sediments, chemicals, and bacteria which flow into and contaminate the River.  We are committed to working with homeowners and community groups to develop “river friendly” planting buffers and small oyster gardens, which will greatly improve the water quality and enjoyment of the river.  We are also committed to providing the guidance, expertise and tools to make this happen for property owners and helping property owners to “do the right thing” for the river.

To these ends, the Lynnhaven River Buffer Restoration Committee will help homeowners, to install a plant buffer of native vegetation adjacent to the shoreline, using native or naturalized grasses and perennial plant material to absorb harmful pollutants before they can run into the waterway.  Second, the committee will assist property owners in practicing proper plant health care techniques to maximize the health of your plants while minimizing harmful pollutants, and finally, the committee will assisst in the design and provide guidance to complete a Lynnhaven River Friendly Landscape Plan.
